What Should Go Inside a First Aid Kit?

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

It is imperative that any place of business or commercial property include one or more first aid kit. This means that you will be ready in the event of an injury or emergency. You can find pre-made kits, but it can be more cost effective and thorough to put them together yourself. What should go inside?

Bandages

One of the most important category of items is bandages. You should include many different sizes and types. You can never have too many, but some basic additions you can make are:

  • gauze pads of multiple sizes, including 4x4 and 8x10
  • gauze roller bandages, at least 2" wide
  • triangular bandages
  • adhesive bandages of multiple sizes, like
  • band-aids
  • adhesive tape

Wound Preparation

Before the bandages go on, the injury should be tended to. This means your first aid kit should include tools for cleaning and stabilizing. Typical cleaning agents like moistened towelettes or hydrogen peroxide are essential. Tweezers and scissors can help remove debris or clothing from the area. Gloves will help keep both you and the injured person hygienic- consider including latex and non-latex, for those with allergies. Splints and elastic wraps are essential for sprains and breaks.

Emergency Equipment

If possible, within the same bag or box, you should also include an emergency kit. A blanket can be helpful in cases of shock, or if the injured person needs to be warmed up. Resuscitation bags and pocket masks make CPR more sanitary. Water bottles or a water jug can also come in very handy, for both drinking and rinsing off wounds. You can also throw in directions for requesting emergency assistance or guides for what to do in various emergency situations, or contact information for a disaster remediation service.

It is not only necessary to have a first aid kit in your place of business, but you should also keep it up to date. Certain items can expire, so be sure to check on it every 6 months or so. Don't overlook this important aspect of owning commercial property!
