When disaster strikes, you need to be prepared, and

SERVPRO cares about just that!

Your disaster recovery plan needs to be both thorough and simple. Simplicity is key because, unfortunately, all the planning in the world isn’t going to save us from ourselves in case of emergency, our brains will fail us.

Basically, your brain, when confronted with a crisis, shuts down. The shut-down may be temporary, but it’s very real.

Your hippocampus consolidates information for you. It stores information, information like the first action on your disaster recovery plan. When your hippocampus is confronted with new information, like say a tornado or water main break, it is responsible for switching you over to stress-response mode. This is a good thing, but when your hippocampus hits the stress button indicating that your body should release cortisol from your adrenal glands, it shuts itself down and waits until there’s a good level of the hormone circulating in your body.

So in those first instances when you’re confronted with a crisis, your brain won’t be focusing on your disaster recovery plan, and unless that plan is simple, it might take a while for your brain to get back to it.

How can you identify mold problems in your business or commercial facility?

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Mold lurks where you can't see it.

Finding the answer to your mold questions means investigating thoroughly for what may very likely be invisible clues.

If you have water stains on a ceiling or your walls, you may not think it is a big deal, but the damage will often be more than one little spot. You may find discoloration of drywall or ceiling tiles; this means that moisture has already caused a problem, and you probably need help.

Here is how to identify the warning signs of mold:

Investigate - If you smell musty or mildew odors it is a likely sign that there is mold growing.

Look - For discolored marks, stains, signs of leaks, bubbling paint, and areas of high moisture or humidity.

Communicate - to your employees and operations managers about indoor air quality and health.

Call - SERVPRO for help. We provide free inspections and advice to help you determine if you have an infestation.

Three Easy Tips for Removing and Preventing Mold Growth in Your Shower

How To Get Rid of Mold In Your Shower

Dealing with shower mold in Lee County, Mississippi, can often be overwhelming. However, the good news is that there are plenty of quick and easy solutions available to you.

Here are three tips on how to get rid of black mold in your shower.

1. Create a Mold Removal Solution

One of the most effective ways to remove shower mold is to create a mold cleanup solution. There are three main types of solutions:

  • white vinegar
  • borax
  • bleach

White vinegar is a great option to remove the mold because it's safe and nontoxic. All you have to do is pour some vinegar into a spray bottle and apply it to the affected areas. Similar to white vinegar, a solution of borax and water can be used to spray over any moldy surfaces. While bleach is an effective method to kill black mold, it should only be used as a last resort due to its toxic and irritating fumes.

2. Use a Scrub Brush

If your mold removal solution isn't able to target the hard-to-reach areas of your bathroom, a scrub brush can do the trick. Simply scrub the affected areas of your shower until the mold is gone. You can even use a toothbrush to scrub grout or caulking, which are common sources of mold but hard to reach with a large scrub brush. Be sure to rinse the toothbrush afterward, as this prevents spores from spreading throughout your bathroom. Contacting mold remediation specialists can help you target any remaining mold and stave off future growth.

3. Ventilate Your Bathroom

Once you've removed any existing mold from your bathroom, you'll want to prevent further spores from forming. Because mold thrives in humid environments, turning on the bathroom fan while showering is an effective way to reduce steam and moisture. You can also open the window immediately after showering, as this can allow the excess evaporation to escape.

Although the mold removal process differs for each scenario, the general blueprint remains the same. Using these three tips can help you both remove shower mold and prevent its recurrence.

Tips on How to Clean a Moldy Washing Machine

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

white washing machine Call your local SERVPRO today! 662-690-6502

Take preventative measures in your washing machine.  It's natural to assume that our washing machine is self-cleaning, especially with all that soap and warm water tumbling around. However, this isn't always the case. Your laundry machine has a pretty high risk of falling victim to mold growth, especially if you don't take the proper preventative measures. Follow these steps if your laundry machine has an unwanted mold smell.

Getting Rid of the Mold:

Luckily, mold is extremely easy to clean out of a laundry machine. Just follow these steps:

  • Create a non-toxic, mold cleaning mixture using equal parts baking soda and freshwater, 1/4 of each product should suffice. Add this cleaning solution to the machine's detergent container.
  • Pour two cups of white vinegar directly into the drum itself.
  • Run a normal wash cycle on the highest heat setting possible. Make sure you don't have any clothes in the washer for this specific cycle.
  • After the cycle ends, use a kitchen sponge or scrub brush to attack any remaining patches of mold. Use a mixture that contains equal parts of white vinegar and freshwater for this process.
  • Even if your washing machine isn't suffering from mold growth, it's still a good idea to repeat the above process at least once each month for maintenance purposes. After all, the best offense is a great defense.

Preventing Mold Growth

Once you've gotten rid of the mold that caused your musty, dirty laundry, you're going to want to keep it away. Prevent subsequent mold growth by keeping your machine's drum as dry as possible. This involves removing your laundry as soon as possible after the wash cycle ends and leaving the washer's door open to dry out when you aren't using the machine. You might also consider running a fan near the washer to help accelerate airflow.

Nothing ruins the excitement of laundry day quite like a moldy washing machine. Using the above technique should solve the problem, but if it doesn't then you need to contact mold remediation experts for further help.

Understanding about "Hoarding Disorders"

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

House about to overflow A cheerful picture but in reality hoarding issues can be a very sensitive situation

According to The American Psychiatric Association "People with hoarding disorder excessively save items that others may view as worthless. They have persistent difficulty getting rid of or parting with possessions, leading to clutter that disrupts their ability to use their living or workspaces. Hoarding is not the same as collecting. Collectors look for specific items, such as model cars or stamps, and may organize or display them. People with hoarding disorder often save random items and store them haphazardly. In most cases, they save items that they feel they may need in the future, are valuable, or have sentimental value. Some may also feel safer surrounded by the things they save. Hoarding disorder occurs in an estimated 2 to 6 percent of the population and often leads to substantial distress and problems functioning. Some research show hoarding disorder is more common in males than females. It is also more common among older adults--three times as many adults 55 to 94 years are affected by hoarding disorder compared to adults 34 to 44 years old.

What is Hoarding?

Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail, or packaging. Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats, and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

How can SERVPRO of Tupelo Help?

SERVPRO of Tupelo and SERVPRO of Amory/Aberdeen & West Point can encounter hoarding situations in several different ways. We may be called for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when we arrive on-site. We will communicate with the insurance company regarding the customer's contents coverage and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored in our temporary storage in our warehouse so work on the fire or water loss can begin. Another way SERVPRO of Tupelo and SERVPRO of Amory/Aberdeen & West Point encounter hoarding jobs is through calls from landlords, caseworkers, real estate agents, or family members. These phone calls normally take place after a death has occurred. In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well. Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO of Tupelo and SERVPRO of Amory/Aberdeen & West Point is here to help make the situation “Like it never even happened.”

Why Should We Spend Extra Time Extracting from a Water Damage? SERVPRO Knows Why!

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

24/7 SERVPRO is Here to Help 24/7 SERVPRO is Here to Help

Water damage can equal fire in the amount of destruction it can cause. Along with the visible signs of saturation and warping in building materials and contents, there can be mold and foul odors that remain if you do not use a professional service to remove and restore your property.

When SERVPRO of Tupelo and SERVPRO of Amory/Aberdeen & West Point start to clean, our technicians spend extra time on the water removal step, because the more moisture we remove on the front end means less drying time. Recently when our technicians worked cleaning up a pipe break behind a kitchen cabinet, the water had flowed from the tile flooring to the point where the carpeting began in the living room. The cabinets were backless, and because the homeowner had left them open, there was surprisingly little moisture remaining around the source of the water loss.

Why SERVPRO? Our technicians are certified in a diverse array of restoration sciences and arrive with the right equipment to mitigate any size property loss from water, fire, or other situation. The homeowner had placed towels down between the kitchen floor and the living room in an attempt to stop water but had in fact, exacerbated the issue by making it easy for the water to travel through the towel and into the carpet and padding. Soft probes confirmed the moisture had penetrated less than a foot into the carpeting and weighted extractors were used to push the moisture out of the carpet padding as much as possible.

Once our technicians are satisfied they have removed as much residual moisture as possible, they set-up dehumidifiers and air movers to dry the rooms. The air movers are angled to blow across surfaces where it causes water vapor to rise and in turn, is captured by the dehumidifiers and expelled. Thorough drying of the kitchen and carpeting, followed by hand cleaning and disinfecting took care of the lingering odors left behind by the dampness.

SERVPRO Offers Customers With Superior Service With High Standards

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

back of a persons SERVPRO t-shirt in meeting Our team at SERVPRO of Tupelo and Amory/Aberdeen & West Point strives to offer all customers superior customer service with high standards

Local commercial owners in North Mississippi need to know they have a trustworthy and reliable workforce, people who can not only handle the cleanup but do so with excellence and low overhead. That means asking about IICRC certification as well as the company's business practices. Turn to the place that can take care of it all with quality and care.

1. We Offer Training to all Employees

When workers arrive, customers need assurance that staff understands how to handle all elements of the job. For that reason, SERVPRO takes pride in providing educational classes for all areas of service. Once hired, the national office expects crew members to take self-paced classes on fire and water restoration as well as carpet and upholstery care. A mitigation certificate is rewarded upon completion, ensuring that whoever handles your assignment has the knowledge to do so. This ensures that all branches can provide for clientele equally.

2. We Strive to Meet and Exceed National Expectations

Know that the people you hire want to serve you best, striving to go above and beyond in treatment. The Institution of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certificate, IICRC, establishes a common, national awareness for how to best treat your premises. As a third party, it provides restoration companies with objectives for how to sanitize and rebuild. Not only does SERVPRO meet these criteria, but it is a training school for the program. Classes are offered year-round on multiple topics. In addition, e-classes can be taken on various topics, fitting into schedules conveniently.

3. We Always Go the Extra Mile

Learning isn't isolated to initial hiring. Clients should have trust that their trained specialists are just that: experts on a subject. That means they should aspire to know and grow. E-classes can be taken at any time, fitting conveniently into work schedules and allowing for expanded awareness of the latest procedures. In an ever-changing field, restoration facilities must strive to meet and go beyond the IICRC objectives. SERVPRO's national office encourages all franchises to remain at the top of the field, studying new techniques that can save customers time and money.

You Can Trust the Professional at SERVPRO

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

Unexpected damage to your home is something that requires immediate attention. The professional team at SERVPRO of Tupelo and Amory/Aberdeen & West Point understands the urgency that you feel and will work quickly to restore your home in a variety of situations. SERVPRO crews are trained to handle water, fire, mold, and storm damage. A small plumbing leak can turn into a costly mess for a homeowner if it is not dealt with quickly and efficiently.

SERVPRO professionals undergo extensive training to ensure they are properly equipped when they enter your home. This training includes certification as Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians, which means they know and understand best practices for remediating mold as taught by The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration. They must also undergo strict training through SERVPRO to ensure each team member is well versed in the science of restoration as well as the operation of our state of the art equipment.

Mold remediation is needed for a variety of reasons; common issues that lead to mold include leaks or poor ventilation. It is vital to engage a professional restoration services company for the removal of mold as well as neutralizing the favorable conditions conducive to growth. It is important to understand that it is impossible to remove 100% of mold spores as they exist naturally both inside and outside. The spores do not germinate unless optimum conditions exist. Once that happens you will often notice a musty odor in your home and the colonies spread quickly.
When water causes issues in your home time is of the essence. The longer the water and excessive moisture remains in your home the more damage it can cause and the more complicated it is to remove. The water becomes more contaminated after just 48 hours even clean water requires handling as a category three biohazard. Carpet, walls, and flooring that was damaged by the water will be assessed. Our local SERVPRO technicians work to restore as much as possible in an effort to save homeowners the cost of replacement whenever possible.
Fire damage is both physical and airborne. Fire odors linger after the cleanup of the property if not properly treated. SERVPRO uses a combination of methods to get rid of unpleasant scents left in the aftermath of a fire. Removing debris and charred building materials is important, SERVPRO professionals will also look for belongings that have restoration potential. We work closely with homeowners and insurance adjusters to make sure we stay within a budget during fire cleanup and mitigation.

SERVPRO of Tupelo and Amory/Aberdeen & West Point is always ready to help; you can call us 24/7 at 662-690-6502. Our team members are always ready to respond no matter what the emergency.

3 Reasons Not to Wait for an Adjuster to Visit Before Restoring Your Home

After your home has sustained water damage due to a flood, flood insurance often requires an adjuster to come to your home to assess the damage that has been done. However, waiting to restore your home until after an adjuster to come to your home after a storm is often not necessary for several reasons.

1. Adjusters Are Busy

Once a natural disaster has occurred, insurance companies immediately begin to work with their customers to help them restore their homes. However, the demand for an adjuster to visit homes can mean you’ll be waiting to see an adjuster. Waiting to begin making major fixes to your home isn’t necessary, and you can document the damage that has been done by taking photographs and saving receipts.

2. You Won’t Lose Money Cleaning Up

Although you might be tempted to leave your home exactly as it is after it has sustained flood damage, you will not receive less compensation if you start the cleanup process quickly. It is likely that you will want or need certain items removed from your home before your flood insurance company sends an adjuster to visit your home, and this is okay. Documenting the cleanup process can help to ensure you are fairly compensated for your losses.

3. Your Home Could Become More Damaged

Minor issues in your home can quickly become major issues if they are not fixed in a timely manner. Structural damage, mold damage and more can occur if your home is not dried out and if standing water is not removed. In order to save yourself from having to spend more money, time and effort in restoring your home, it’s often wise to start the restoration process quickly.

Knowing that you do not have to wait for your flood insurance company to send an adjuster to your home before beginning the restoration process might help you save money and protect your home. As you start the restoration process, many people find it helpful to work with professionals in water damage cleanup and restoration.

Hidden Water Damage Dangers

Sink faucet with dripping water. SERVPRO is always here to help for your water damage needs, no matter the time of day or day of year! Call us today at 662-690-6502.

When people think about water damage, they think about a major event such a busted hot water heater, water rushing from the bathtub into the lower floors, or an overflowing toilet spilling water all over the bathroom. Unfortunately, hidden leaks can be as costly if they go unnoticed for a long time.

A cracked water line could cause a slow drip behind the fridge that could damage the wall behind it, rot the underfloor and end up ruining the cabinets around it. Unless you notice a puddle of water or start smelling a musty odor around the appliance, it is hard to spot the damage until it is too late.

Take the time to walk around your home and check around the toilets, under the kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, hot water heater, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, etc. Regularly inspect the crawlspace, attic, and basement for signs of long-term water damage, leaks, and mold.

If you are dealing with moisture issues, you can call SERVPRO of Tupelo and Amory/Aberdeen & West Point at 662-690-6502 to schedule an inspection.

Free Guide: 10 Things to focus on when dealing with a Water Damage Loss

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

Hallway with flooding, SERVPRO logo with words "YOUR PROBLEM, OUR SOLUTION." SERVPRO of Tupelo and SERVPRO of Amory/Aberdeen & West Point is always here to help!

Experiencing a water loss can be a traumatic time for you or your business. In Atlanta, Georgia, we experience all types of water damage situations. We wanted to put together a free guide of 10 things that walks you through the process of what to focus on if you have a water loss in your home or business.

1. Assess the situation: It is critical to look over the situation and see exactly what you are dealing with. It is critical to make sure that you take plenty of photographs of the damage and make sure that the source of what caused the damage is well documented. It is extremely important to make sure you do not walk or enter the water if the power is still on in the home or business. At this time it is proper to check with your insurance company to see what type of coverage you have.

2. Check was is wet throughout the damaged area: Through the use of moisture meters and other devices, you can begin to see what is wet and not wet. It is critical that you map out the damage and affected area. This can be an important part of the documentation process.

3. Begin the water extraction process: The first step after the documentation has begun, is to get the water removed as soon as possible. If the water sits for too long it can begin to create secondary damages. Water can be removed by using portable or truck mount extractors. Portables will take more time, and the truck mounts are much faster and efficient.

4. Begin to remove damaged materials that can not be dried and ventilate enclosed areas: Once all of the water has been extracted, certain flood cuts and other vent holes might be necessary. This is to allow air flow in closed off spaces. If no ventilation is allowed, secondary damage can occur inside the walls. Many times if you are dealing with sewage water, more flood cuts will be necessary. Try to take as many before and after photos as well.

5. Start to place air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the home or facility: The proper amount of equipment is critical when drying out a structure. It is important to make sure that all of the guidelines of the IICRC are followed to insure proper drying times. Be sure to continue to take plenty of photographs of the equipment in place on the job.

6. Monitor the drying process daily: Every 24 hours it is critical to make sure that you are checking the facility to make sure that it is drying. Sometimes there might be a delay in the drying process due to the source of the damage not being corrected. If so it will need to be corrected so proper drying can occur. Be sure to document the drying data each day for accurate records.

7. Remove Equipment: Once the home or building is dry, all of the equipment can be removed. It is important to make sure the right cleaning products are used to clean up the affected area. This will keep other secondary issues from happening as well.

8. Document with more photos: After the job is complete, be sure to document with more photos. This will keep accurate records for your insurance company from start to finish. You can never take too many photos when dealing with a water loss.

9. Begin the reconstruction process: Once everything is dry, you can begin to put the pieces back together. In some cases you might have to hire a contractor to do specific tasked like repair damaged drywall from the water. Be sure to continue to document any and all work on your home or business.

10. Keep complete records on file: After the entire job is complete, be sure to keep all of your records on backup. This can be valuable in case of any secondary damages in the future.

SERVPRO of Tupelo and Amory/Aberdeen & West Point can handle any water damage job from start to finish. It is critical to make sure you understand the in's and out's of each step mentioned above. SERVPRO has the team and equipment to handle any size job and make sure that it is properly documented along the way. SERVPRO of Tupelo is always here to help. We can even help with your finacing options. Call us today at 662-690-6502.
If you have recently suffered through a flood, fire, or mold infestation, we understand that the only thing worrying you as much as restoring your home is how you are going to pay for it. Fortunately, we have some good news.

SERVPRO of Tupelo has recently partnered with the GreenSky lending company to help you put your Tupelo home back together. We take the burden of removing mold, water ,and fire damage off your shoulders while our new partner lifts the financial concern.

We sought out this solution after assisting customers who tried to save money by doing the demolition, cleaning, and restoration themselves. In every case, the homeowners or residents simply added to the problem and found themselves with a larger bill; sometimes much larger.

GreenSky has processed over $8 Billion of installment loans to home and business owners who need help to put their property back to its original state. This Atlanta based lending business specializes in restoration based installment loans and has developed a system that lets them process the loans quicker than most other lenders. Depending on your need and qualification, you may get up to $55,000 to cover restoration costs.

Our office personnel have recently completed GreenSky’s financial and software training and can help you however you may want to make your application. The program provides us with several options: In our office, over the phone with GreenSky or filling out an online form that can be processed in just a few minutes while you sit in our waiting room.

The third option is an incredible mobile app. With it, one of our trained technicians can take your information at your residence or business and have you approved for an installment loan before we finish unloading our equipment. Within an hour or two, we can have you set up with an 84 to 96, month loan (7 or 8 years) at a payment that can be as low as $79 a month.

Once approved for a loan, there is no need to use it immediately. GreenSky knows that the restoration process takes time and gives you four months to use it. That gives you the breathing room you need to make the right decisions on repairing your home and whether to restore or replace your personal property.

At SERVPRO of Tupelo, we do everything possible to keep costs to a minimum, but costs can still run into a year’s salary very quickly. For more information on what we can do for your home and how GreenSky can help, call us at 662-690-6502.

6 Disasters Your Property Insurance May Not Cover

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Tupelo is always here to help! Call us today at 662-690-6502
When disaster strikes your home, Property Insurance, is supposed to be there to help you pick up the pieces. Most of the time, it does.

A Bankrate survey found that 81 percent were aware flooding is not covered by regular homeowners insurance. You may have heard earthquakes also require special coverage. Yet you may not know that there are other types of damage that are excluded from most policies as well:

Mold

At least 1,000 species of mold are common to the United States, according to the New York-based trade group the Insurance Information Institute.

Despite the threat, a standard homeowners insurance policy generally either limits coverage for mold damage or outright excludes it.

Some insurers offer an endorsement to expand coverage limits for mold claims but only if you are willing to pay more for your insurance, she says.

The best cure for mold is to prevent it from growing in the first place. If the basement floods after a rainstorm or a pipe is leaking, eliminate the moisture promptly.

Sewer backup

America’s sewer lines are rapidly aging, with some more than 100 years old. As more homes have been connected to these out-of-date lines, sewage backups have followed.

Other sources of backups include pipelines that handle both stormwater and raw sewage — and become overwhelmed in rainstorms — and blockages from tree roots that work their way into sewer-line cracks.

When a sewer backs up into a home, it can damage floors, walls, furniture and electrical systems. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover sewer backups.

The Insurance Information Institute says sewer-backup damage often can be covered for an additional premium of just $40 to $50 per year.

Sinkholes

Sinkholes can seem like something out of a horror movie. For example, there was the Florida man who was swallowed up in early 2013 when a sinkhole opened without warning beneath his bedroom.

Sinkholes are sudden gaps in the earth’s surface that occur after groundwater gradually dissolves rock such as limestone and carries bits of it away, creating large pores and cracks in bedrock. Once large cavities form underground, the land above it may suddenly settle or collapse, creating the sinkhole.

In the United States, sinkholes tend to cause the most problems in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Most home insurance policies will not cover damage associated with “earth movement,” such as an earthquake or sinkhole.

Florida is the only state in which insurers are required to provide coverage for sinkhole damage

Florida insurers must include insurance for “catastrophic ground cover collapse” — which refers to damage so severe, the home is uninhabitable — as part of standard homeowners insurance.

In every other state, earth movement is excluded from the insurance policy.

Termite infestation

Colonies of anywhere from a few hundred to several million termites can quietly and methodically devastate your home.

Wood, paper and dead plant material that is in contact with soil near the house provides termites with a ready source of food and an entry. And moisture accumulated around foundations and in poorly ventilated crawl spaces gives termites a source of water they need to survive.

Over time, termites can damage or destroy support beams and other wood features in a house. The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause $5 billion in damage in the U.S. each year.

If these unwanted guests cause wear and tear to your home, do not expect your insurer to bail you out.

Homeowners policies do not pay for termite damage.

Homeowners can avoid structural damage with early intervention.

Nuclear plant accidents

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, says nearly 3 million Americans live within 10 miles of an active nuclear power plant. If an accident at a nearby reactor leaves your home uninhabitable, standard homeowners insurance will not cover the claim. But that does not mean you will be unprotected.

A 1957 federal law called the Price-Anderson Act compensates people in the United States for any damage or injuries resulting from a commercial nuclear accident.

The law was called upon after the nation’s worst nuclear accident, at the Three Mile Island plant near Harrisburg, Pa., in 1979.

The insurance paid for the living expenses of families who decided to evacuate.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says an insurance pool of more than $12 billion is available to pay out claims.

Claims covered under Price-Anderson include:

  • Bodily injury.
  • Sickness.
  • Disease resulting in death.
  • Property damage and loss.

In addition, individuals evacuated from an affected area can expect reimbursement for reasonable living expenses beyond what you ordinarily pay. The coverage does not pay your mortgage, does not pay for your normal food bills.

Some acts of terrorism

The recent Boston Marathon bombings were a reminder that terror can strike at any moment.

The Insurance Information Institute says terrorist attacks using nuclear, biological, chemical or radioactive weapons are considered “acts of war” that are fundamentally uninsurable. Standard home insurance policies do not specifically reference terror attacks.

However, the policy does cover the homeowner for damage due to explosion, fire and smoke, these are the most likely types of damage a home would suffer in a terrorist incident.

If you own a condominium or co-op, the policy you carry on your individual unit will protect your structure and possessions from damage related to a terrorist attack.

However, damage to common areas — including the roof, basement, elevator, boiler and walkways — is not covered unless your board purchases separate terrorism coverage.
